Fort Flagler & Port Townsend, WA 07-2023

Posted on July 8, 2023July 16, 2023

Fort Flagler, located on the northern tip of Marrowstone Island in Washington State, was one of the three forts established to protect Puget Sound from potential invasions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The other two forts were Fort Worden and Fort Casey. This defensive network was known as the Triangle of Fire.

Fort Flagler was named after Brigadier General Daniel Webster Flagler and was officially activated in 1899. The fort was equipped with artillery batteries and troops to defend against potential sea attacks. It played an important role in both World War I and World War II.

However, with advances in war technology and changing tactics, the fort’s relevance diminished post World War II. It was deactivated in 1953 and later purchased by the state of Washington in 1955. Today, it is part of the Washington State Parks system and provides a variety of recreational opportunities such as camping, hiking, and fishing. It’s also a historic destination where visitors can tour the old fort buildings and learn about its history.

Port Townsend is a city located at the northeastern tip of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. The city has a rich history dating back to its incorporation in 1851. The city is named after Port Townsend Bay, which in turn was named by Captain George Vancouver in honor of his friend the Marquis of Townshend in 1792.

In the late 19th century, Port Townsend was a major seaport with a bustling harbor and was even considered for the location of the terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad. However, the economic boom ended when the railroad bypassed the city, leading to a sharp economic decline.

Despite this setback, Port Townsend managed to preserve a large number of Victorian buildings that were built during its boom period. This gives the city a unique historical character, earning it the nickname “City of Dreams”. It was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1977 for its well-preserved Victorian architecture.

Today, Port Townsend is a vibrant community known for its cultural events such as the annual Wooden Boat Festival and the Port Townsend Film Festival. It continues to be a popular tourist destination due to its historic charm, stunning natural surroundings, and arts scene.
